Do you need proof of Austrian citizenship?
You need a citizenship certificate (Staatsbürgerschaftsnachweis) or other proof.

Applying for Austrian citizenship
Where to apply
Municipal Department - Immigration and Citizenship (MA 35) is competent to handle your application for citizenship in the following cases:
- Your main residence is in Vienna.
or - Your main residence is abroad and you were born abroad.
or - Your main residence is abroad and you were born in Vienna before 1 July 1966.
or - Your main residence is abroad, you were born on or after 1 July 1966 and your mother was a resident of Vienna at the moment of your birth.
If you live in another federal state of Austria, for example Burgenland, Salzburg or Vorarlberg, please contact the competent department in that state (German).
If you live outside of Austria, please contact the Austrian embassy or the Austrian consulate general in your country of residence.
Would you like to attend an informational event for Austrian citizenship?
If you attend the informational event (Erstinformationsveranstaltung), you will get:
- Information about the required documents, for example proof of your proficiency in German
- Information about the application process
- Information about extending Austrian citizenship to your spouse and/or children
After a general presentation, you will have the chance to ask questions regarding your personal situation.

Other means of acquiring Austrian citizenship
You do not need to book an appointment for the informational event if you plan to acquire Austrian citizenship in the following way:
- Acquisition of Austrian citizenship by descent (Abstammung) (German)
- Acquisition of Austrian citizenship for persons persecuted by the National Socialist regime and their descendants (German)
- Acquisition of Austrian citizenship for persons with extraordinary achievements in the interest of the Republic of Austria (German)
- Acquisition of Austrian citizenship in case you have been wrongfully considered an Austrian citizen (Putativösterreicher*innen) (German)
