General overview - Learning Your Way in Vienna
Target group
Newly arrived UN employees, their spouses, and staff of missions to the UN who have not taken the language training before.
Concept
To introduce newcomers to the various practical services and places they need to know about living in the city - by means of field trips and visits - and to build in a German language component related directly to these practical applications.
Start and registration
Trainings usually start in spring. Staff or their spouses interested in participating are invited to enquire or register at the following E-mail addresses:

Admission
30 participants maximum can attend the programme. Preferably, the group will be composed of students affiliated with various different organisations of the VIC. Apart from this, admission is on a first-come first-served basis.
Participants will be informed of their admission one week prior to the start of the training. Participants who cannot be accepted will be put on a waiting list.
Format
Language training in class at the VIC.
A number of excursions on Wednesdays (additional registration for each excursion required).
Content
The programme consists of German language instruction particularly geared to the practicalities of living in and getting to know Vienna, as well as visits to selected services and areas related to the practical necessities of taking up residence in Vienna. Special emphasis is given to introducing newcomers to emergency procedures such as hospital visits, car accidents, et cetera, and to teaching them the language skills needed in order to cope with all of these situations.
Responsibility
Joint project of the City of Vienna and the IAEA Division of Personnel, with the City of Vienna providing the funding and organisation.
Benefit
The City of Vienna stands to benefit by fulfilling its mandate to connect more directly to the UN community and improve relationships. The organisations benefit by being able to link their international mobility programme services and induction activities for newcomers not just to the VIC but to Vienna itself - in the most practical and useful of ways.
