16 Emergency vehicles for Ukraine
Currently, members of the emergency services in Ukraine including fire fighters and ambulance staff, are faced with major difficulties when performing their duty under the prevailing conditions. What is more, numerous emergency vehicles were destroyed in the course of the fighting. To facilitate the provision of efficient help on site and as part of its ongoing assistance and relief activities, the City of Vienna sent 16 emergency vehicles (eleven firefighting and five ambulance vehicles) to Ukraine.
In this context Mayor Michael Ludwig highlighted: "Since day one of the Russian invasion, Vienna has demonstrated its solidarity with Ukraine and supported the country by providing aid and relief supplies. In this spirit, it is all the more important now to continue organising further deliveries of supplies to the war zone. The emergency vehicles we are thus making available are fully operational and in perfectly serviceable condition".
Numerous relief activities implemented
Since the onset of the fighting, Vienna has stood by Ukraine in solidarity. Immediately after Russia had launched its first attack in February 2022, the City of Vienna dispatched the first deliveries of medical supplies to Ukraine. Further trucks loaded with 60 tons of humanitarian relief supplies as well as goods to provide for those who had to flee their homes, were to follow in March. Vienna also sent trucks carrying personal protective garments and safety gear to the Republic of Moldova.
Financial aid for Ukraine was quickly made available through the disbursement of Vienna's share in the federal provinces' emergency relief package amounting to 429,000 euros. In April 2022, Vienna's professional emergency medical services equipped ten ambulance vehicles, purchased by the Archdiocese of Vienna, with medical items and supplies, dressing material etc. In May, a truck loaded with equipment and supplies for a hospital in Balti set off for the Republic of Moldova.
Vienna sends relief supplies to Ukraine
Quick and simple
Alongside providing increased humanitarian assistance and stepping-up its financial support to NGOs active on site, the City of Vienna set up an Arrival Centre for refugees from Ukraine, located at Althanstraße 14 in Vienna's ninth district. There, staff from the City of Vienna and relief organisations provide initial (medical) care and guidance to people displaced by the war in their home country.
