International Conference of the Vienna School of International Studies - Diplomatische Akademie Wien

The annual DASICON conference was held this year on 1 March 2024 under the title "Digital Diplomacy: The Influence of New and Emerging Technologies on international affairs".

The conference is organised once a year by current students of the Diplomatische Akademie Wien. This year's conference focused on the impact of new technologies on international relations.

The aim was to raise participants' awareness of issues related to digital diplomacy and to give them an insight into future developments in the relationship between technology and diplomacy.

To this end, renowned experts from a wide range of professional backgrounds were invited to facilitate valuable discussions and professional exchange with the participants

Multi-faceted debates and a rich exchange of knowledge

The programme for the 180 participants included eight panels on various topics related to technological progress and digitalisation. Panels included the ethical aspects of using artificial intelligence, how technology can help in crisis situations, and aspects of environmental diplomacy.

International speakers also discussed the importance of cooperation between scientists and diplomats, and the impact of technologies such as bitcoin and blockchain on the global market. The conference thus offered a wide range of discussions and information, allowing participants to develop a deeper understanding of the various challenges and opportunities associated with digitalisation and the technologies available.

Marco Ender is Head of WienCERT, the Computer Emergency Response Team of the City of Vienna, and IT Security Officer of the Information Technology Department (MA 01). As a speaker on cyber security, he emphasised its importance at international and regional level.
