Origin of the Vienna Market Authority
On 25 January 1839, a decree by the Imperial and Royal Chancellery allowed the Imperial and Royal Provincial Government of Lower Austria to unite the separate market inspection authorities of Vienna in a single department.
At first the newly established institution officially named "Vereinigte Marktpolizei - Aufsichtsanstalt" (literally the United Market Police - Supervisory Institution) was only in charge of the administration of the Viennese markets.
In the course of the 19th century, however, the Viennese market commissioners were assigned new tasks. The market regulations of 12 January 1884 contained a "pro memoria" for the market commissioners listing the following functions and tasks:
- Market Police
- Levying of Market Fees
- Hygiene and Veterinary Police
- Food Police
- Business Police
- Traffic Police
- Fire Police
- Electricity Police
This range of tasks remained valid until the year 1893. In the course of a restructuring that year, the veterinary tasks among others were outsourced, which led to the creation of a Veterinary Board.
