Bodies of water in Vienna
Vienna has an enormous variety of water bodies. Water covers about five percent of the city’s total surface – the highest percentage among all Austrian federal provinces.
The following two areas are particularly popular for bathing and other leisure activities:
- Danube Island
- Alte Donau (Old Danube)

Official responsibilities
Municipal Department 45 - Water Management (MA 45) is in charge of all bodies of water in Vienna, both groundwater and surface water. The only two exceptions are Danube and Danube Canal; they are navigable waterways and thus fall under federal jurisdiction and management.
