Christmas markets in Vienna
From mid-November every year, sparkling Christmas lights in the streets of Vienna and a multitude of seasonal markets (known as "Adventmärkte", "Weihnachtsmärkte" or "Christkindlmärkte") lend a special Christmas flair to the Austrian capital.
The Christmas market in front of Vienna City Hall, officially dubbed "Wiener Christkindlmarkt" is the city’s largest and most popular seasonal market.
If you want to enjoy a cosy atmosphere in narrow streets dating back to the Biedermeier Period, Spittelberg Christmas market is the place to go. Locals like to come here for a cup of mulled wine or hot punch after work.
Christmas markets in historical settings are particularly popular, including the Christmas village at Maria-Theresien-Platz nestled between the Museums of Art History and Natural History, the Christmas market at Schönbrunn Palace, and the Christmas village at Belvedere Palace.
Those who prefer quiet and peaceful places should not miss the Altwiener Christkindlmarkt at Freyung and the Christmas market at Am Hof (German) near the city centre.
"Art Advent" is the motto of the Christmas market at Karlsplatz, which caters to those interested in arts and crafts with a special programme for this clientele. The Christmas village at the university campus Altes AKH and Winter at MQ are most popular among students.
