The Vienna Energy Bonus '22 supports people in Vienna in coping with rising energy costs and rising prices.

New applications for the Energy Bonus '22 can no longer be submitted. Applications could be submitted from 5 December 2022 to 31 March 2023.

General information

The Vienna Energy Bonus '22 is a support scheme offered by the City of Vienna. You have no legal claim to the Vienna Energy Bonus '22.

The City of Vienna sends an information letter to every address in Vienna, which was registered as the main residence of one or more individuals on the cut-off date of 10 November 2022. The letter contains the password that you need for your online application.

The bonus amounts to 200 euros per eligible address. It will be paid to the account you have provided in your application. If you have not provided an account, you will receive the bonus by postal order. Usually, postal order payments will be made within a few weekdays after you have submitted your application.

Only one application per address will be accepted. However, if your main residence is an assisted facility of the City of Vienna, your application can be made on a per person basis.

Requirements

You can apply for the Vienna Energy Bonus if you are 18 years or older and have lived at an address in Vienna as your main residence on the cut-off date of 10 November 2022.

If you have registered at your address after the cut-off date, your application will be automatically denied.

If you were registered at an address in Vienna on the cut-off date and have moved to another place afterwards, you can submit an application for your old address. In that case, make sure also to provide your new address, if you want to receive your bonus payment by postal order.

You need to meet the following annual income limits:

  • 40,000 euros, if only one person lives at the address as their main residence (as defined under Section 1 Paragraph 7 of the Austrian Registration Act).
  • 100,000 euros, if several people live at the address as their main residence (as defined under Section 1 Paragraph 7 of the Austrian Registration Act).

Only the income of individuals who are 18 years or older will be counted towards the limit.

The income limit of 40,000 euros will also apply if your main residence is an assisted facility of the City of Vienna.

The income limit of 100,000 euros will apply for example:

  • If you are a single parent and your minor child is registered with you at your address.
  • If you live together with your parents in a single-family home.
  • If you live in a flat share with other people who are 18 years or older and have also registered the address as their main residence.

To be eligible your income must be below the applicable income limit.

Your annual gross income will be indicated on your income tax assessment notice for 2021. If you have not received an income tax assessment notice for 2021, the notice for 2020 will be used. If you have neither received a notice for 2020 nor for 2021, you can use your annual payslip for 2021. Your income in 2022 is not relevant for eligibility.

If you have no taxable income from one or more of the seven income categories defined under the Income Tax Act and have only received one of the following benefits in 2021, you meet the income requirements. The following benefits are not counted towards your annual gross income.

  • Vienna basic benefit
  • Vienna basic welfare support
  • Housing benefit
  • Benefits under the Unemployment Insurance Act and the Public Employment Service Act, such as unemployment benefit, emergency assistance, retraining benefit, subsistence benefit and/or funding for course expenses and incidental course expenses
  • Benefits under the Labour Market Promotion Act
  • Childcare allowance
  • Maternity benefit
  • Family burden equalisation benefits, such as child benefit
  • Other benefits, such as study grants
  • Income support and compensation benefits, such as victim’s pension
  • Long-term care benefit

To be eligible the income of all adult people living at the address as their main residence needs to be below the applicable income limit.

Please note that you can submit only one application per address.

You have to repay any benefits you have received but were not qualified for.

Deadlines

Application:

Mailing of letters:
The letters containing the password will be sent out district by district between 29 November 2022 and 13 December 2022. Please contact the responsible department if you have not received a letter by mid-December 2022.

Your online application must include the following information:

  • The password which will be sent by post to every address in Vienna
  • Name and date of birth of all people living at the address as their main residence
  • Contact details
  • Bank account details

You will find your password on the first page of the information letter. You can use the password for only one application per address.

Please make sure that the spelling of your name and date of birth are exactly as they appear on your residence registration form, otherwise you cannot submit an application.
