Additional information on the data
Every person entitled to vote is assigned to a specific electoral ward (ward no. 1 - xxx). In terms of data storage, votes cast directly in the polling station of the voter’s electoral ward on election day are allocated to the for the respective ward.
Alternatively, voters may cast their votes in hospitals, geriatric centres or nursing homes in Vienna. Unlike regular electoral wards that are established for a certain area (of primary residence), these special electoral wards have no allocated (residential) group of voters per se. On the list of results, electoral wards of this type can be found just below the regular electoral wards. However, if the number of votes cast in a special electoral ward is very low, the votes may be added to the result of another electoral ward (depending on the responsible electoral commission). In this case, zero may be displayed in both the columns "Persons entitled to vote" and "Votes cast".
Further electoral wards without an assigned (residential) electorate are established for organisational purposes, e.g. for postal votes. The data for "organisational wards" is usually listed just below the respective district election results. For elections to the Austrian National Assembly, votes cast in other federal provinces that cannot be assigned to a specific district must also be allocated to an electoral ward. These votes are allocated to a number of organisational districts (district 91-98), In this case, they wards have not do not have any assigned voters.
The number of electoral wards established for organisational purposes depends on suffrage and legal regulations (postal vote yes/not, EU citizens entitled to vote in district council elections and EU elections, legal regulations applying to the counting of voting cards returned). Therefore this number may vary from one election to another (even for elections of the same type). If you need detailed information on "organisational" electoral wards, please call +43 1 4000-89401.
